2 Kings 5:10

Listen to this article

“And Elisha sent a messenger unto him, saying, Go and wash in Jordan seven times, and thy flesh shall come again to thee, and thou shalt be clean.”

This verse is part of the narrative about Naaman, a Syrian commander who had leprosy. Naaman, upon the advice of a captured Israelite girl, went to seek healing from the prophet Elisha in Samaria.

Context:To better understand this verse, it’s essential to look at the broader context of the passage. The story of Naaman can be found in 2 Kings 5:1-27. It recounts how God used Elisha to heal Naaman’s leprosy and bring him to faith.

Naaman’s Request:Prior to verse 10, Naaman had arrived at Elisha’s house, expecting the prophet to come out and perform a grand healing ritual. However, Elisha sent a messenger instead with a simple message for Naaman.

The Command:In verse 10, Elisha’s messenger relayed God’s command to Naaman. Naaman was instructed to go and wash in the Jordan River seven times. It’s important to note that Jordan held significant symbolism in the Bible, representing God’s power and deliverance.

Symbolism of Seven:The number seven often holds symbolic meaning in the Bible, representing completeness and perfection. In this context, Naaman’s sevenfold washing may symbolize the complete act of faith and obedience required of him. It demonstrates the importance of following God’s instructions fully, without questioning or doubting.

Naaman’s Response:Initially, Naaman was displeased with Elisha’s instructions. He expected a grander gesture and felt that the rivers in his homeland were better than the Jordan. Naaman’s pride almost hindered him from receiving God’s blessing and healing.

Obedience and Healing:Thankfully, Naaman’s servants persuaded him to obey the prophet’s command. Naaman eventually humbled himself, went to the Jordan, and washed himself seven times as instructed. Miraculously, his flesh was restored like that of a young child, and he was cleansed of his leprosy.

Spiritual Lessons:This verse and the story of Naaman convey several important spiritual lessons. It highlights the need for humility and obedience when seeking God’s blessings. Naaman had to let go of his pride, expectations, and personal preferences to receive God’s healing. It reminds us that God’s ways may not always align with our expectations, but He works through simple acts of faith and obedience.

Overall, 2 Kings 5:10 emphasizes the importance of trusting and obeying God’s instructions, even when they may seem unconventional or contrary to our expectations. It teaches us that true healing and restoration come through humble obedience and faith in God’s power and plan.

Please note that interpretations may vary, and it is always beneficial to study the Bible further, consult commentaries, and seek guidance from spiritual leaders to gain a deeper understanding of God’s Word.
