2 Kings 6:18

Listen to this article

“And when they came down to him, Elisha prayed unto the Lord, and said, Smite this people, I pray thee, with blindness. And he smote them with blindness according to the word of Elisha.”

Historical Context:The passage is set during the time of the prophet Elisha, who succeeded Elijah as a prominent prophet in Israel. The passage recounts an incident where the king of Syria sent his army to capture Elisha in order to thwart the prophetic revelations Elisha was receiving from the Lord and sharing with the king of Israel.

The Presence of Elisha:Elisha had been divinely guided and empowered to perform miracles throughout his ministry. In this passage, Elisha’s ability to perceive the hidden movement of the Syrian army showcased his unique connection with God. His presence and insights were crucial in the unfolding events.

Elisha’s Prayer:When the Syrian army surrounded the city where Elisha was staying, his servant became fearful and anxious. Elisha, however, prayed to the Lord, asking Him to strike the army with blindness. It’s important to note that Elisha did not rely on his own strength or military prowess, but turned to God in prayer and sought His intervention.

God’s Response:In response to Elisha’s prayer, God granted his request and struck the Syrian army with blindness. This miraculous act of God’s power rendered the entire army unable to see. The blindness was not physical, but a supernatural loss of sight that incapacitated the soldiers.

The Purpose of the Miracle:The miracle of blindness served two main purposes. First, it protected Elisha and allowed him to escape capture by the Syrian army. Second, it demonstrated God’s supremacy over the pagan gods of the Syrians. By striking the army with blindness, God revealed His power and superiority, affirming Elisha’s prophetic ministry and protecting His chosen people.

Lessons and Applications:

  • Dependence on God:Elisha’s response in prayer highlights the importance of relying on God in times of trouble. Rather than succumbing to fear, Elisha sought divine intervention, recognizing that God alone could deliver him from the imminent danger.
  • God’s Protection:The passage demonstrates God’s faithfulness and willingness to protect His servants. Elisha’s safety and deliverance were entirely dependent on God’s intervention. Similarly, as believers, we can trust in God’s protection and deliverance in our own lives.
  • God’s Sovereignty:The blindness inflicted upon the Syrian army was a powerful display of God’s sovereignty and control over human affairs. It reminds us that God is not limited by human capabilities and can intervene in miraculous ways to accomplish His purposes.
  • Prayer as a Weapon:Elisha’s prayer serves as a reminder of the potency of prayer. It is a powerful tool available to believers, enabling them to connect with God and seek His intervention in difficult situations. Just as Elisha’s prayer had an immediate effect, our prayers can also bring about God’s intervention in our lives.

In conclusion, 2 Kings 6:18 demonstrates the power of prayer and God’s ability to protect His people. It highlights the importance of relying on God in times of trouble, recognizing His sovereignty, and trusting in His deliverance.
