Listen to this article

“And there stood a watchman on the tower in Jezreel, and he spied the company of Jehu as he came, and said, I see a company. And Joram said, Take an horseman, and send to meet them, and let him say, Is it peace?”

Context:To understand the significance of 2 Kings 9:17, it’s important to consider the surrounding context. This verse is part of the account of Jehu’s anointing as king of Israel and the subsequent events that unfolded. Jehu was anointed by a prophet as the instrument of God’s judgment against the wicked house of Ahab.

The Watchman on the Tower:In this verse, we encounter a watchman stationed on a tower in Jezreel. Watchmen played a crucial role in ancient times by keeping a lookout for approaching enemies or messengers. Their role was to observe and report what they saw to the relevant authorities. In this case, the watchman spots the company of Jehu approaching.

Joram’s Response:Joram, who was the king of Israel at the time, receives the report from the watchman. Joram instructs one of his horsemen to go and meet Jehu’s company and ask them if they come in peace. Joram’s response reveals his concern and curiosity about the intentions of Jehu and his company.

Foreshadowing of Future Events:This verse foreshadows the events that follow. Jehu’s anointing as king marked the beginning of a series of events that led to the downfall of the wicked house of Ahab. The encounter between Jehu and Joram ultimately resulted in Joram’s death, fulfilling the prophecy against Ahab’s family.

Themes:This verse highlights several recurring themes found throughout the Bible, such as divine judgment, God’s sovereignty, and the consequences of wickedness. It serves as a reminder that God’s word and prophecies always come to pass, even if they take time to be fulfilled.
