2 Kings 9:17
And there stood a watchman on the tower in Jezreel, and he spied the company of Jehu as he came, and said, I see a company. And Joram said, Take an horseman, and send to meet them, and let him say, Is it peace?
2 Kings 9:17 (KJV)
Context
This verse belongs to the account of Jehu’s anointing as king of Israel. A prophet anointed Jehu as God’s chosen instrument to bring judgment on the wicked house of Ahab. The scene takes place in Jezreel, where King Joram of Israel was staying. A watchman on the tower saw Jehu’s company approaching and reported it to the king.
Meaning
The watchman’s role was vital in ancient cities. He kept watch for enemies or messengers and reported what he saw. Here, he announced, “I see a company.” Joram’s response, “Take an horseman, and send to meet them, and let him say, Is it peace?” shows his anxiety and uncertainty about the approaching group. The question “Is it peace?” was a common greeting, but here it carries dramatic irony. Jehu’s arrival brings not peace but judgment.
Biblical connections
This event fulfills the prophecy against Ahab’s family. Jehu’s mission leads to Joram’s death and the downfall of Ahab’s house. The watchman’s vigilance and the king’s question highlight the tension before God’s judgment falls. The theme of divine sovereignty is clear: God’s word always comes to pass, even when its fulfillment takes time.
Application
This passage reminds us that God sees the hearts of rulers and nations. No human power can hide from His judgment. It also encourages believers to trust that God’s promises and warnings are certain. Just as the watchman reported what he saw, we are called to be watchful and truthful in our own lives.
Reflection
Consider how you respond when God’s purposes draw near. Joram asked about peace, but he had not sought peace with God. True peace comes from obedience to Him. Let this verse prompt you to examine your own readiness to meet God’s will, whether in blessing or in correction.
