2 Kings 9:26

Posted on 18 May at 11:19

Surely I haue seene yesterday the blood of Naboth, and the blood of his sonnes, sayd the Lord, and I will requite thee in this plat, sayth the Lord. Now therefore take and cast him into the plat of ground, according to the word of the Lord. 2 Kings 9:26 (KJV)

of ground,

according to the word of the LORD. 2 Kings 9:26 (KJV)

Context and Background: 2 Kings 9:26 is part of the larger narrative surrounding the reign of Jehu as king of Israel. Jehu was anointed by a prophet sent from Elisha, and his commission was to execute judgment on the house of Ahab for their wickedness and idolatry. In this verse Jehu confronts Jehoram, the son of Ahab, who was then king of Israel.

The Blood of Naboth: The reference to “the blood of Naboth” points back to the tragic episode recorded in 1 Kings 21. Naboth, a righteous man, owned a vineyard adjoining Ahab’s palace. Ahab coveted the vineyard and tried to persuade Naboth to sell it, but Naboth refused, citing the law that forbade surrendering his inheritance. Jezebel, Ahab’s wicked wife, plotted against Naboth, arranging false witnesses who accused him of blasphemy. The false testimony led to Naboth’s unjust condemnation and he was stoned to death outside the city, shedding innocent blood.

Divine Judgment: In this verse the Lord declares that He has seen the bloodshed of Naboth and his sons. God, who is just and righteous, will not overlook such injustice. The phrase “I will requite thee in this plat” means that God will avenge the shedding of innocent blood in the very place where the crime occurred. The “plat of ground” refers to the field that Ahab wrongfully acquired after Naboth’s death, and the judgment will be carried out there according to the word of the Lord.

Application and Lessons:

Justice and Accountability – The story underscores that God expects His people to act justly, respecting the rights and property of others. He holds individuals accountable, and even when human justice fails, divine justice will prevail.

The Consequences of Sin – The narrative warns that sin leads to tragic outcomes and serves as a sobering reminder to remain faithful to God’s commands.

God’s Faithfulness – The account highlights God’s unwavering faithfulness and His assurance that He will uphold righteousness.

Repentance and Redemption – While Jehu carried out God’s judgment on Ahab’s house, the broader story later shows Jehu’s own departure from God’s ways, reminding believers that true repentance and a transformed heart are essential for lasting redemption.

Overall, 2 Kings 9:26 serves as a powerful reminder of God’s perfect justice, urging believers to pursue righteousness, uphold truth, and trust in the Lord’s righteous judgment.
