2 Kings 9:37

Posted on 18 May at 11:19

And the carkeise of Iezebel shall be as doung vpon the face of the field in the portion of Iezreel, so that they shall not say, This is Iezebel. 2 Kings 9:37 (KJV)

And the carcase of Jezebel shall be as dung upon the face of the field in the portion of Jezreel;

so that they shall not say, This

is Jezebel. 2 Kings 9:37 (KJV)

Historical Context: In this passage the prophet Elisha sends a young prophet to anoint Jehu as king of Israel and to pronounce judgment on the house of Ahab, including the notorious queen Jezebel. Jezebel is known for her idolatry, persecution of God’s prophets, and her role in the wrongful seizure of Naboth’s vineyard. The prophecy that Elijah gave in 1 Kings 21:23 concerning Jezebel’s gruesome death is fulfilled here.

Symbolism and Meaning:

Jezebel’s Carcass: The verse calls her remains a “carcase,” emphasizing her total demise and the divine judgment that leaves her unburied and dishonored.

Dung on the Face of the Field: Comparing her fate to dung spread on the face of the field highlights utter disgrace and uncleanliness. In Jewish culture dung was repulsive, signifying that no honorable memorial would remain for her.

The Portion of Jezreel: Jezreel is the site where Ahab and Jezebel took Naboth’s vineyard. Placing her carcass in that lot links her death directly to the consequences of those earlier sins.

Spiritual Lessons:

Judgment for Wickedness: Jezebel’s end serves as a stark reminder that unrepentant wickedness inevitably incurs God’s judgment, even if it appears delayed.

God’s Vengeance: The passage demonstrates that God is just and will execute judgment against those who oppose Him and mistreat His people, fulfilling the promise made to Elijah.

Humility and Reverence: Describing her end as dung on the field teaches the importance of humility before God; no amount of power or influence can shield a person from divine accountability.

This study calls believers to reflect on the seriousness of sin, the certainty of divine justice, and the need for a reverent, humble walk with God.
