2 Kings 10:11
So Iehu slew all that remained of the house of Ahab, in Iezreel, and all his great men, and his kinsefolkes, and his priests, vntill he left him none remaining. 2 Kings 10:11 (KJV)
This verse records the continuation of Jehu’s execution of God’s judgment on the house of Ahab, as commanded by God through the prophet Elisha. Jehu was anointed king over Israel by God’s command to bring judgment upon the wicked house of Ahab. The narrative begins in 2 Kings 9, where Jehu is anointed and instructed to destroy Ahab’s lineage. Ahab and his wife Jezebel were notorious for their promotion of idol worship, particularly the worship of the false god Baal. They led Israel into great spiritual apostasy, and God had pronounced judgment upon their house.
Jehu, as an instrument of God’s judgment, executed Ahab’s son Joram, the reigning king of Israel, and also killed Ahaziah, the king of Judah, who had allied himself with Joram. He first kills King Joram of Israel and King Ahaziah of Judah, who had allied with Joram. Additionally, Jehu came across Jezebel, who was thrown down from a window and trampled underfoot by horses, fulfilling prophecy.
In 2 Kings 10:11, Jehu slew all that remained of the house of Ahab in Jezreel, and all his great men, his kinsfolks, and his priests, until he left him none remaining. This act demonstrates God’s righteous judgment against persistent idolatry and leadership that leads nations astray. Jehu was thorough in carrying out God’s command to eradicate the influence of Ahab’s family and their idolatrous worship.
However, some descendants of Ahab survived and continued to rule, as indicated by 2 Kings 15:13-14.
The passage underscores the seriousness of spiritual compromise and the consequences of turning from God’s truth, serving as a warning to remain faithful to Him. It reminds us of the importance of remaining faithful to God and not falling into the trap of idolatry or compromising our devotion to Him. It also serves as a sobering reminder that there are consequences for our actions, both in this life and in eternity. The passage highlights the severity of God’s judgment against those who lead others into sin and idolatry. Overall, 2 Kings 10:11 portrays the execution of God’s judgment on the house of Ahab and serves as a powerful reminder of the consequences of leading others astray from God’s truth.
