2 Kings 12:2

Posted on 18 May at 11:40

“And Jehoash did that which was right in the sight of the Lord all his days wherein Jehoiada the priest instructed him.”

Certainly! Here is a Bible study on Historical Context:The book of 2 Kings records the history of the divided kingdom of Israel and Judah. Jehoash, also known as Joash, was the king of Judah and reigned for forty years. He became king at the age of seven, following the death of his father, Ahaziah. Jehoash’s reign was marked by his commitment to repairing the temple and his early obedience to God.

Obedience to Instruction:The verse emphasizes that Jehoash did what was right in the sight of the Lord as long as Jehoiada the priest instructed him. Jehoiada served as a faithful spiritual advisor and mentor to Jehoash, providing him with godly counsel and guidance. Jehoash’s obedience to Jehoiada’s instructions played a crucial role in his righteous rule.

Influence of a Godly Mentor:Jehoiada’s influence on Jehoash was significant. It is essential to surround ourselves with wise and godly mentors who can guide us in our spiritual journey. Their wisdom, experience, and knowledge can help us make righteous decisions and stay aligned with God’s will. Jehoash’s obedience to Jehoiada’s instruction exemplifies the importance of godly counsel in our lives.

Faithfulness in Leadership:Jehoash’s commitment to doing what was right in the sight of the Lord demonstrates his faithfulness in leadership. As king, he took responsibility for the restoration of the temple, which had fallen into disrepair. This action displayed his dedication to honoring God and preserving the sacredness of the place of worship.

The Importance of Continuous Instruction:The verse implies that Jehoash’s faithfulness was dependent on Jehoiada’s instruction. This highlights the ongoing need for spiritual guidance and instruction throughout our lives. It is essential to remain teachable and open to receiving instruction from those who have wisdom and understanding in matters of faith.

Application to Our Lives:The verse encourages us to seek godly instruction and mentoring in our lives. We should surround ourselves with individuals who can guide us in making decisions that align with God’s will. Additionally, it reminds us of the importance of maintaining a teachable spirit and being open to learning from those who have a deeper understanding of the Scriptures and a closer relationship with God.

In conclusion, 2 Kings 12:2 highlights the righteous reign of King Jehoash and the significant influence of Jehoiada the priest in his life. It emphasises the importance of godly instruction, faithful leadership, and the continuous need for spiritual guidance in our own lives.
