2 Kings 15:1

Posted on 18 May at 11:19

In the twenty and seuenth yeere of Ieroboam king of Israel, began Azariah sonne of Amaziah king of Iudah to reigne. 2 Kings 15:1 (KJV)

Historical Context: This verse marks the beginning of the reign of Azariah (also known as Uzziah) as king of Judah. Azariah’s reign began in the twenty‑seventh year of Jeroboam’s reign as king of Israel. At this point the kingdom of Israel had already been divided into the northern kingdom of Israel and the southern kingdom of Judah.

Understanding Azariah’s Reign: Azariah was the son of Amaziah, who also was a king of Judah. He became king at the age of 16 and reigned for 52 years in Jerusalem (2 Kings 15:2). According to 2 Chronicles 26:3, only 40 of those years were effective because his reign ended with leprosy. During the early years he followed the ways of the Lord and was prosperous (2 Chronicles 26:4‑5). He strengthened Jerusalem’s defenses, built cities, and maintained a well‑equipped army (2 Chronicles 26:6‑15). His fame spread far, noted for agricultural advancements and military might (2 Chronicles 26:8‑15).

The Importance of Faithfulness: Despite early successes, Azariah grew proud and attempted to offer incense in the temple, a duty reserved for priests (2 Chronicles 26:16‑20). God struck him with leprosy, and he remained a leper until his death (2 Chronicles 26:21). His downfall serves as a warning against pride and the dangers of straying from God’s commands.

Application to Our Lives: Azariah’s story teaches the importance of remaining faithful to God throughout life. We should guard against pride and remember that all accomplishments come from God. Even in times of success we must stay humble and obedient to His commands. When we veer from faithfulness there may be consequences, but God is always ready to forgive and restore us if we repent and turn back to Him.
