2 Kings 15:2
Sixteen years old was he when he began to reign, and he reigned two and fifty years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Jecholiah of Jerusalem.
2 Kings 15:2 (KJV)
Context
This verse introduces Azariah, also called Uzziah, who ruled the southern kingdom of Judah. He was the son of Amaziah and became king with the consent of the people of Judah (2 Kings 14:21).
Meaning
Azariah began his reign at sixteen, a young age for a king. Yet he ruled for fifty-two years in Jerusalem, one of the longest reigns among Judah’s monarchs. This long tenure brought stability and allowed for lasting policies. The verse also names his mother, Jecholiah of Jerusalem. In Kings, naming the queen mother was a common pattern, though no further account of her is given. Her mention highlights the importance of family heritage in the royal line.
Biblical connections
The parallel account in 2 Chronicles 26:3 confirms the same details of his age and reign. The fuller story of Azariah’s rule appears in 2 Kings 15:3-7 and 2 Chronicles 26, showing both his accomplishments and his later failure. This verse sets the stage for understanding how God used him despite his youth.
Application
Azariah’s early start and long reign remind us that God can use people of any age for His purposes. Youth does not disqualify someone from significant responsibility. Likewise, a long period of service can be a blessing when it aligns with God’s will. The mention of his mother also encourages us to value the quiet influence of family in shaping leaders.
Reflection
Every detail in Scripture, even a king’s age and his mother’s name, serves the larger account of God’s dealings with His people. Consider how God has placed you in your current season of life. Trust that He can bring stability and fruit through faithful service, whether your time of influence is long or short.
