2 Kings 15:5

Posted on 18 May at 11:40

“And the LORD smote the king, so that he was a leper unto the day of his death, and dwelt in a several house. And Jotham the king’s son was over the house, judging the people of the land.”

Historical context:2 Kings 15:5 is part of the historical account of the kings of Judah and Israel. In this particular verse, it focuses on Azariah (also known as Uzziah), who became king of Judah at the age of 16 and reigned for 52 years.

The sin of Azariah:Azariah started his reign with great promise, following in the ways of the Lord. He sought God and prospered in various endeavours, including military achievements. However, his downfall came when he became proud and acted presumptuously.

The consequences of Azariah’s sin:According to the verse, the Lord smote Azariah with leprosy. Leprosy was a severe skin disease that not only affected a person physically but also rendered them ceremonially unclean, isolated from society, and unable to perform their duties as a king.

  • Pride and presumption:Azariah’s downfall serves as a warning against the dangers of pride. Despite his early devotion to God, he allowed success to inflate his ego, leading to his downfall. This teaches us the importance of humility before God and recognising that all our achievements come from Him.
  • Consequences of sin:Azariah’s punishment demonstrates the principle of reaping what one sows. Sin has consequences, and even those in positions of authority are not exempt. It reminds us that our actions have repercussions, and we should strive to live in obedience to God’s commands.
  • God’s sovereignty and justice:Although Azariah was a king, he was not exempt from God’s judgment. This emphasises God’s sovereignty and His commitment to justice. God is not swayed by external appearances or positions of power; He holds everyone accountable for their actions.
  • God’s mercy and grace:Despite Azariah’s sin, God did not take his life immediately but allowed him to live in isolation until his death. This shows God’s mercy and patience. Even in judgment, God demonstrates His grace by giving people an opportunity to repent and turn back to Him.
  • Cultivate humility:Recognise that any success or achievements are gifts from God. Guard against pride and arrogance, seeking to maintain a humble attitude in all circumstances.
  • Acknowledge the consequences of sin:Understand that disobedience to God’s commands leads to negative consequences. Strive to live a life that honours God and aligns with His principles.
  • Trust in God’s justice:Remember that God is just and will hold everyone accountable for their actions, regardless of their position or status in society. Trust in His ultimate justice and refrain from seeking revenge or taking matters into your own hands.
  • Seek God’s mercy and grace:Even when facing the consequences of sin, God offers mercy and grace to those who turn to Him in repentance. Seek His forgiveness and restoration, knowing that He is loving and compassionate.
