2 Kings 17:3

Listen to this article

“Against him came up Shalmaneser king of Assyria; and Hoshea became his servant, and gave him presents.”

Division of Israel:After the death of King Solomon, the united kingdom of Israel split into two: the northern kingdom of Israel, consisting of ten tribes, and the southern kingdom of Judah, consisting of two tribes (Judah and Benjamin).

Reign of Hoshea:Hoshea was the last king of the northern kingdom of Israel. He ruled for nine years and is remembered as a wicked king who continued the idolatrous practices of his predecessors.

Assyrian Threat:Shalmaneser, the king of Assyria, became a significant threat to the northern kingdom of Israel. The Assyrians were a powerful empire of that time, and they frequently invaded neighbouring territories.

In light of these events, let’s explore the key points and lessons we can glean from 2 Kings 17:3:

Foreign Subjugation:The verse tells us that Hoshea became a servant to Shalmaneser, the king of Assyria. This represents the subjugation of the northern kingdom of Israel under the dominion of a foreign power. It emphasises the consequences of the Israelites’ disobedience to God’s commands and their failure to worship Him alone.

Judgment for Idolatry:The preceding verses in 2 Kings 17 highlight the spiritual decline of the northern kingdom. The people of Israel had turned away from the Lord and began worshipping false gods and idols. God had warned them through various prophets about the consequences of their idolatry. The Assyrian invasion and the subsequent subjugation of Israel can be seen as divine judgment for their persistent rebellion.

Faithfulness and Consequences:The downfall of Israel demonstrates the importance of faithfulness to God’s covenant and the consequences that follow disobedience. Despite God’s repeated warnings and opportunities for repentance, the people and their leaders continued to ignore His commands, leading to their ultimate downfall and captivity.

Overall, 2 Kings 17:3 serves as a sobering reminder of the consequences of turning away from God and the faithfulness required to maintain His blessings and protection. It highlights the importance of remaining steadfast in our devotion to God, avoiding idolatry, and heeding His warnings and instructions.
