2 Kings 17:3

Against him came up Shalmaneser king of Assyria; and Hoshea became his servant, and gave him presents.

2 Kings 17:3 (KJV)

After Solomon’s death, the united kingdom split. The northern kingdom, Israel, comprised ten tribes; Judah, the southern kingdom, had two. Hoshea, Israel’s last king, reigned nine years and continued the idolatrous practices of his predecessors. Assyria, a dominant military power, frequently invaded and subjugated neighboring lands.

This verse records a pivotal moment: Shalmaneser, king of Assyria, came up against Hoshea, and Hoshea became his servant and gave him presents. The word “servant” indicates vassalage—Hoshea submitted to Assyrian authority and paid tribute. This subjugation stripped Israel of independence and marked the beginning of the end for the northern kingdom.

The broader chapter explains that Israel’s captivity was divine judgment for persistent idolatry and disobedience to God’s covenant. The people had followed the practices of surrounding nations, worshiped idols, and refused to listen to the prophets the Lord sent. This verse shows the political consequence of spiritual unfaithfulness: reliance on foreign alliances rather than on God led to humiliation and loss.

Israel’s downfall demonstrates the seriousness of turning away from God. Despite repeated warnings and opportunities to repent, the people and their leaders ignored His commands. This serves as a sobering reminder that disobedience brings consequences, while faithfulness to God’s covenant brings His blessing and protection. It calls us to examine our own hearts, to avoid idolatry in any form, and to heed God’s warnings, remaining steadfast in devotion to Him alone.

Hoshea’s story warns against compromising our allegiance to God for political or material gain. When we trust in human schemes rather than in the Lord, we risk losing what He has given us. Yet the same Scriptures that record judgment also reveal God’s patience and mercy, inviting us to return to Him before it is too late.
