2 Kings 17:22

For the children of Israel walked in all the sins of Jeroboam which he did; they departed not from them;

2 Kings 17:22 (KJV)

This verse sits in the account of the northern kingdom’s downfall. The people had long worshipped idols, and God allowed them to be carried into exile. The immediate setting (2 Kings 17:20-23) shows that the LORD rejected Israel because they followed the sins of Jeroboam.

Jeroboam, the first king of the northern kingdom, set up golden calves at Dan and Bethel. He did this to keep his people from going to Jerusalem to worship, fearing their loyalty would turn to the house of David. The verse says the children of Israel “walked in all the sins of Jeroboam” and “departed not from them.” This means they did not merely sin once; they continued in the same false worship for generations.

The pattern of Jeroboam’s sin is also seen in later kings, as recorded in 1 Kings and 2 Kings. The people’s stubborn refusal to turn back shows the danger of following human leaders into idolatry. God sent prophets to warn them, but they would not listen.

This verse warns us about the danger of persistent sin. It is easy to copy the habits of those around us, even when those habits dishonor God. We must examine our own lives and ask whether we have departed from any sin that has become familiar. True repentance means turning away, not just feeling sorry.

God’s patience is real, but it has limits. The exile of Israel proves that persistent disobedience brings judgment. Yet the same God who judges also calls us to return to Him. Let us not harden our hearts, but choose today to walk in obedience.
