2 Kings 17:35

Listen to this article

“With whom the LORD had made a covenant, and charged them saying, Ye shall not fear other gods, nor bow yourselves to them, nor serve them, nor sacrifice to them”

Context:2 Kings 17 recounts the downfall and exile of the northern kingdom of Israel. The people of Israel had turned away from God and worshiped idols, provoking His anger. As a result, the Assyrians invaded and conquered Israel, taking the people captive. This verse comes from a section where the Assyrians resettled foreign people in the land of Israel.

Covenant Relationship with God:The verse begins by highlighting that the people of Israel had a covenant relationship with the Lord. God had entered into a special agreement with the Israelites, making them His chosen people. This covenant included His promises of protection, provision, and blessings. God’s covenant relationship with Israel emphasised the exclusivity of their worship and their commitment to serve Him alone.

Prohibition against Other Gods:God had given clear instructions to the Israelites regarding their worship. The verse reminds the people of Israel of God’s commandments: not to fear other gods, not to bow down to them, not to serve them, and not to offer sacrifices to them. These instructions were part of the covenant relationship, and obedience to them was essential for maintaining their connection with the one true God.

The Consequences of Idolatry:The preceding verses in 2 Kings 17 describe how the Israelites had forsaken God’s commandments and turned to idolatry. They worshipped foreign gods, built high places, and set up sacred pillars and Asherah poles for their worship. This act of disobedience led to the downfall of the kingdom and their subsequent captivity. The verse serves as a reminder of the severe consequences that result from forsaking God’s covenant and engaging in idolatry.

Application to our Lives:Although this verse is specific to the historical context of ancient Israel, it contains lessons that are relevant to our lives today. As Christians, we are in a covenant relationship with God through Jesus Christ. We are called to worship God alone and to abstain from idolatry in all its forms. Idolatry can take various shapes in our modern world, such as the pursuit of material possessions, the worship of success, or the elevation of personal desires above God’s will. This verse challenges us to examine our hearts and ensure that we are placing God above all else in our lives.

In conclusion, 2 Kings 17:35 emphasises the importance of honouring the covenant relationship with God and avoiding idolatry. It serves as a reminder of the consequences of forsaking God’s commands and the need for wholehearted devotion to the one true God.
