2 Kings 17:34

Listen to this article

“Unto this day they do after the former manners: they fear not the LORD, neither do they after their statutes, or after their ordinances, or after the law and commandment which the LORD commanded the children of Jacob, whom he named Israel;”

Historical Context:2 Kings 17:34 is part of the account of the northern kingdom of Israel’s fall and exile.

The chapter describes how the Assyrians conquered and deported the people of Israel because of their persistent disobedience and idolatry. The verse highlights the spiritual decline and rebellion of the people who remained in the land after the exile.

  • Disregard for God’s Law:

The verse begins by stating, “Unto this day they do after the former manners.” It suggests that even after experiencing the consequences of their disobedience, the people continued to live in the same sinful ways. They did not fear the Lord, nor did they follow His statutes, ordinances, or commandments. This highlights their disregard for God’s law and their ongoing rebellion against Him.

The Consequences of Disobedience:The downfall of the northern kingdom of Israel and their subsequent exile were the result of their persistent disobedience to God. Despite numerous warnings and opportunities for repentance, they chose to follow after false gods and engage in idolatrous practices. As a consequence, God allowed the Assyrians to conquer them and scatter them among the nations.

Lessons for Today:

The verse serves as a reminder of the importance of obedience to God’s commands. The people of Israel failed to recognize the gravity of their actions and the consequences that would follow. It prompts us to examine our own lives and consider whether we are faithfully following God’s statutes and commandments or if we have allowed disobedience and rebellion to creep into our hearts.

Additionally, it emphasizes the need for genuine repentance and turning back to God when we stray from His ways. God is gracious and merciful, always ready to forgive and restore those who humble themselves before Him.

Application:

  • Reflect on your own obedience to God’s commandments. Are there areas in your life where you have disregarded His statutes or compromised your faith?
  • Examine the consequences of disobedience in your life. Consider any negative patterns or struggles that may have arisen due to disobedience.
  • Repentance is key. If you recognize areas of disobedience, humbly confess them to God, seeking His forgiveness and guidance to walk in His ways.
  • Cultivate a reverential fear of the Lord. Recognize His authority, His holiness, and His love for you. Allow this fear to motivate you to obey Him wholeheartedly.

Remember, the overarching message of Scripture is God’s faithfulness and His desire for His people to walk in obedience and fellowship with Him. May we learn from the mistakes of the past and strive to live in accordance with God’s will.
