2 Kings 17:33

Listen to this article

They feared the Lord, and serued their owne gods, after the maner of the nations whom they caried away from thence. 2 Kings 17:33 (KJV)

Historical Context: – 2 Kings 17:33 is part of the narrative about the fall of the northern kingdom of Israel.

After the death of King Solomon, the united kingdom of Israel split into two: the northern kingdom (Israel) and the southern kingdom (Judah).

The northern kingdom had a series of wicked kings who led the people into idolatry and disobedience to God’s commandments.

As a consequence, God allowed the Assyrians to conquer the northern kingdom and take the Israelites into captivity.

Idolatry and Syncretism: The verse highlights a major problem among the foreign settlers brought by the Assyrians to replace the exiled Israelites.

While they “feared the LORD,” they also “served their own gods” according to the customs of their own native nations.

This reflects the syncretism and idolatry that plagued the region after the Assyrian conquest.

Despite being placed in the land by Assyria, these new inhabitants combined worship of the LORD with their own pagan deities, demonstrating a lack of true devotion to God’s commandments.

“And the people made them molten images, even as the nations did of the lands whither they were carried away, after the similitude of the images of the nations of the lands.”

The verse highlights a major problem among the Israelites who were taken captive by the Assyrians: they made molten images in the fashion of the surrounding nations.

This reflects the syncretism and idolatry that plagued the Israelites throughout their history.

Despite occasional reverence for the Lord, many Israelites succumbed to the worship of foreign gods and assimilated pagan practices into their own religious rituals.

The people’s worship of the Lord did not prevent them from engaging in idolatry, showing a lack of true devotion and obedience to God’s commandments.

The Consequences of Idolatry: The sin of idolatry was a central issue leading to Israel’s downfall.

God had warned the Israelites against worshiping other gods and commanded them to worship Him alone (Exodus 20:3-5).

The worship of foreign gods not only violated God’s commandments but also undermined the relationship between God and His people.

It demonstrated a lack of faith, trust, and loyalty towards the one true God.

Ultimately, God’s judgment fell upon the Israelites, leading to their captivity and exile as a result of their persistent idolatry.

Application: The verse serves as a reminder to believers today to guard against syncretism and idolatry in their own lives.

Although we may claim to fear the Lord, it is crucial to examine our hearts and ensure that we are not compromising our faith by serving other gods.

True worship of God requires wholehearted devotion and obedience to His commands, without allowing the influences of the world to dilute our commitment to Him.

We should be vigilant to identify and eliminate any idols or practices that hinder our relationship with God, seeking to align our lives with His will.
