2 Kings 17:41

Listen to this article

So these nations feared the Lord, and serued their grauen images, both their children, and their childrens children: as did their fathers, so doe they vnto this day. 2 Kings 17:41 (KJV)

Historical Background: 2 Kings 17:41 takes place after the Assyrians conquered the northern kingdom of Israel. They deported the Israelites and brought in various people from different nations to settle in Israel. These new inhabitants were unfamiliar with the ways of the LORD, and they continued the worship practices of their own gods.

Fear of the LORD and Idol Worship: The verse records that these nations “feared the LORD,” yet their understanding of the LORD was mixed with worship of their own idols and false gods. At the same time the verse records that they “served their graven images” and, as another rendering notes, “served the Asherah and the milch idols, bowing themselves on every high hill, and under every green tree.” Their fear of the LORD was therefore not based on a true reverence and knowledge of Him but rather on a superficial level of recognition, adding the worship of the LORD to their existing religious beliefs.

Generational Influence: The passage notes that they served their “graven images, both their children, and their children’s children: as did their fathers, so do they unto this day.” This indicates that the worship of false gods and idols had become deeply ingrained in their culture and was passed down from one generation to the next, highlighting the power of tradition and the influence of parents and ancestors on religious practice.

Spiritual Syncretism: The verse reveals the syncretism that had taken place among the people. Syncretism refers to the blending or merging of different religious beliefs and practices. The new inhabitants of Israel, while fearing the LORD, also continued to worship their own gods, creating a mixture of religious systems that departed from the exclusive worship of the LORD commanded in the law given to Israel.

Application:

This verse serves as a warning against a shallow or compromised faith. It reminds us that true worship of God requires complete devotion and the abandonment of all false gods and idols. We should not allow cultural practices or traditions of the world to dilute or distort our relationship with God. We are called to worship the LORD in spirit and in truth (John 4:23‑24) and to follow Him wholeheartedly.

In conclusion, 2 Kings 17:41 highlights both the spiritual syncretism and the pervasive idol worship that existed among the nations settled in the former northern kingdom of Israel. It underscores the importance of wholehearted devotion to God and the dangers of compromising our faith.
