Listen to this article

Howbeit, they did not hearken, but they did after their former maner. 2 Kings 17:40 (KJV)

This verse belongs to the historical account of the Northern Kingdom of Israel and its fall to the Assyrian Empire. It records the Israelites’ continued disobedience despite God’s warnings and their persistence in following their former sinful ways.

Historical Background

The divided kingdom: After the reign of King Solomon, Israel split into two kingdoms—Israel (the Northern Kingdom) and Judah (the Southern Kingdom). The Northern Kingdom, comprising ten tribes, continually strayed from God’s commandments, engaging in idol worship and disregarding God’s laws. As a consequence of this disobedience, God allowed the Assyrians to conquer and exile the Northern Kingdom in 722 BC.

Disobedience despite God’s warnings

God’s covenant: Throughout their history God made a covenant with Israel, promising blessing and protection if they remained faithful.

Warning through prophets: God sent several prophets to urge the people to turn away from sinful practices and return to Him.

Persistent disobedience: Despite these warnings, the Israelites persisted in idolatry and continued to follow their former manner.

Lessons we can learn

The consequences of disobedience: The fall of the Northern Kingdom reminds us of the severe consequences that result from disregarding God’s commands.

Importance of heeding God’s word: God desires His people to listen and obey; ignoring His word leads to spiritual decline and destruction.

The faithfulness of God: Even amid Israel’s rebellion, God remained patient and merciful, providing opportunities for repentance through His prophets.

Application to our lives

Obedience to God: We should learn from Israel’s mistake and strive to obey God’s commands, using His Word as a guide for righteous living.

Repentance and change: When we recognize areas of disobedience, we must repent, turn away from sin, and seek God’s forgiveness and guidance.

God’s patience and mercy: Just as God was patient with Israel, He continues to be patient with us. We must not take His grace for granted but respond to His love with gratitude and faithfulness.

In conclusion, 2 Kings 17:40 highlights the Israelites’ persistent disobedience despite God’s warnings. It serves as a reminder for us to be obedient to God’s commands, to seek forgiveness when we fall short, and to appreciate His patience and mercy in our lives.
