2 Kings 18:5
He trusted in the Lord God of Israel; so that after him was none like him among all the kings of Judah, nor any that were before him.
2 Kings 18:5 (KJV)
Context
Hezekiah ruled Judah for twenty-nine years, roughly 715 to 686 BC. His reign came after the northern kingdom of Israel had fallen to Assyria, and Judah faced constant pressure from powerful enemies. The book of 2 Kings records his efforts to remove idol worship and restore true worship of the Lord.
Meaning
The verse says that no king of Judah before or after Hezekiah was like him in trusting the Lord God of Israel. This is a strong statement. It does not mean Hezekiah was perfect, but that his faith was exceptional. He relied on God’s power, wisdom, and promises rather than on idols, alliances, or his own strength. His trust was practical, not just words. He showed it by obeying God’s commands and leading the nation in reform.
Biblical connections
Hezekiah’s trust is seen clearly in his response to the Assyrian threat. When King Sennacherib invaded, Hezekiah sought the Lord’s help, and God delivered Jerusalem (2 Kings 19). His trust also led him to destroy the bronze serpent that Moses had made, because people had begun to worship it as an idol (2 Kings 18:4). This shows that his faith was in God alone, not in religious objects. The Targum, an ancient Aramaic paraphrase, says he trusted in the Word of the Lord, pointing to the same truth.
Application
Hezekiah’s example teaches us to trust God in every situation, even when we face overwhelming problems. His faith gave him courage to resist pressure and to obey God fully. We can follow his example by depending on God’s strength and guidance, not on our own abilities or on things we might be tempted to rely on instead of Him. When we trust the Lord completely, we open the way for Him to work in our lives.
Reflection
Consider what you rely on most when you are afraid or uncertain. Hezekiah’s life challenges us to examine our own hearts and to place our confidence in God alone, who is faithful to those who trust Him.
