2 Kings 18:37

Posted on 18 May at 11:40

“Then came Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, which was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph the recorder, to Hezekiah with their clothes rent, and told him the words of Rabshakeh.”

Context:To understand the significance of 2 Kings 18:37, it is important to consider its context. This verse is part of the account of King Hezekiah’s reign in Judah and his dealings with the Assyrian king, Sennacherib. The Assyrians had invaded Judah, and the Rabshakeh, an official of the Assyrian king, had been sent to intimidate Hezekiah and the people of Jerusalem.

The significance of the characters:

  • Eliakim:He was the son of Hilkiah and was in charge of the palace or the household. He was a high‑ranking official in Hezekiah’s administration.
  • Shebna:He was a scribe or secretary, responsible for writing and keeping official records.
  • Joah:He was the son of Asaph and served as the recorder or chronicler, responsible for documenting events and important information.

Their response:In this verse, we see Eliakim, Shebna, and Joah coming before King Hezekiah, their clothes torn or rent. This tearing of clothes was a traditional sign of mourning, distress, or deep concern. It was a visible expression of their anguish and the seriousness of the situation.

The message of Rabshakeh:The officials informed Hezekiah about the words spoken by Rabshakeh, who had been mocking and blaspheming God, questioning the trust Hezekiah had in God’s deliverance. Rabshakeh had been trying to sow doubt and fear among the people, undermining their faith in God’s protection.

The response of Hezekiah:Following this incident, Hezekiah seeks the Lord’s counsel and prays fervently for deliverance. He goes to the temple and spreads Rabshakeh’s message before the Lord, humbling himself and seeking divine intervention.

Key Lessons:

  • Even in times of distress, it is essential to bring our concerns before God, seeking His guidance and help.
  • Hezekiah’s response demonstrates his faith in God, trusting Him to provide a solution to the Assyrian threat.
  • The tearing of clothes by the officials signifies the gravity of the situation and their deep concern for their nation’s welfare.

Application:

  • When faced with challenging circumstances or opposition, we should follow Hezekiah’s example by turning to God in prayer and seeking His wisdom.
  • It is crucial to maintain faith and trust in God, even when faced with intimidating situations or doubt.

In summary, 2 Kings 18:37 highlights the distressing situation faced by King Hezekiah and his officials in the face of the Assyrian invasion. It encourages us to turn to God in times of trouble and trust in His deliverance.
