2 Kings 22:1
“Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, and he reigned thirty and one years in Jerusalem. And his mother’s name was Jedidah, the daughter of Adaiah of Boscath.”
Context:The book of 2 Kings is part of the historical narrative of the Old Testament, and it continues the account of the Israelite kings from 1 Kings. It covers the period of the divided kingdom of Israel and Judah, focusing primarily on the kingdom of Judah. 2 Kings 22:1 introduces King Josiah, who is known for his reforms and faithfulness to God.
Josiah’s Age and Reign:According to this verse, Josiah was only eight years old when he became king. This was quite unusual, as it was a young age to ascend to the throne. Nevertheless, Josiah reigned for thirty-one years in Jerusalem. Despite his young age, he proved to be a significant and righteous ruler during his long reign.
Historical Background:Josiah became king around 640 BC, during a period of spiritual decline in Judah. His father, Amon, and grandfather, Manasseh, were both wicked kings who had led the nation astray by promoting idolatry and abandoning the worship of the Lord. However, Josiah chose a different path and sought to restore the worship of God.
Jedidah, the Mother of Josiah:The verse also mentions Josiah’s mother, whose name was Jedidah. She was the daughter of Adaiah from the city of Boscath. Unfortunately, we do not have much information about Jedidah beyond this mention, as the focus of the biblical narrative is primarily on Josiah and his reforms.
Lessons from Josiah’s Reign:Despite the challenging circumstances and the corrupt spiritual state of the nation, Josiah decided to seek after God and initiate significant reforms. Later in the chapter (2 Kings 22:8-13), we learn that during the eighteenth year of Josiah’s reign, the Book of the Law (likely the Book of Deuteronomy) was discovered in the temple. This discovery had a profound impact on Josiah, leading him to institute various reforms and renew the covenant between God and the people.
Josiah’s example teaches us the importance of seeking after God and His Word even in challenging times. It also reminds us that age or circumstances should not hinder our commitment to righteousness and obedience to God. Josiah’s determination to follow God’s ways, despite the prevailing spiritual decline, serves as an inspiration for us to remain faithful and pursue God’s will in our lives.
Remember, as you continue your study of the Bible, it is beneficial to read the surrounding verses and explore commentaries to gain a deeper understanding of the historical and cultural context, as well as the broader message of the passage.
