2 Kings 22:14

Posted on 18 May at 11:41

“So Hilkiah the priest, and Ahikam, and Achbor, and Shaphan, and Asahiah, went unto Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvah, the son of Harhas, keeper of the wardrobe; (now she dwelt in Jerusalem in the college;) and they communed with her.”

This verse is part of the narrative concerning King Josiah of Judah and his efforts to restore the worship of God and rid the land of idolatry. To understand the significance of this verse, let’s examine the context and the key individuals mentioned.

King Josiah:Josiah was one of the righteous kings of Judah who ascended to the throne at the age of eight. He sought to bring about religious reforms and turn the nation back to the Lord. During his reign, the Book of the Law (possibly the Book of Deuteronomy) was rediscovered in the temple, which had been neglected for years.

Hilkiah the priest:Hilkiah was the high priest at that time. He found the Book of the Law and gave it to Shaphan the scribe, who then read it to King Josiah.

Shaphan:Shaphan was a scribe who played a crucial role in the religious reforms under Josiah. He read the Book of the Law to the king and reported the king’s response.

Ahikam, Achbor, and Asahiah:These were officials who accompanied Hilkiah and Shaphan to Huldah the prophetess.

Huldah the prophetess:Huldah was a prophetess in Jerusalem. She lived in the area of Jerusalem known as “the college.” When Josiah heard the words of the Book of the Law, he sent these men to inquire of the Lord through Huldah, seeking her interpretation and guidance.

This verse illustrates the humility and obedience of King Josiah in his quest for spiritual guidance. Instead of relying solely on his own understanding or the counsel of his advisors, he sought the word of the Lord through a prophetess. This demonstrates his desire to align himself with God’s will and to understand the implications of the Book of the Law that had been discovered.

It is worth noting that Huldah’s inclusion in this story highlights the role of female prophets in the Old Testament. While prophets were more commonly male, there were notable instances of female prophets who played important roles in delivering God’s messages and providing guidance to the people.

In summary, 2 Kings 22:14 reveals the collaborative effort of the priest, the scribe, and the officials to seek spiritual guidance from Huldah the prophetess. This verse emphasizes the importance of humbly seeking God’s wisdom and the value of consulting individuals with spiritual insight when faced with important decisions or matters of faith.
