2 Kings 22:15

Posted on 18 May at 11:41

“And she said unto them, Thus saith the LORD God of Israel, Tell the man that sent you to me,”

This verse is part of a larger narrative that describes the righteous reforms initiated by King Josiah of Judah. During his reign, the Book of the Law (likely the Book of Deuteronomy) was discovered in the temple. Hilkiah the priest found the book and gave it to Shaphan the scribe, who then read it before the king.

In 2 Kings 22:15, we encounter a response from Huldah, a prophetess, to the messengers who were sent to inquire of the Lord. Huldah’s message is directed to “the man that sent you to me,” referring to King Josiah.

Now, let’s explore the significance and lessons we can draw from this verse:

Faithful messengers:The messengers were sent by the king to inquire of the Lord, showing Josiah’s desire to seek God’s guidance and follow His will. This highlights the importance of seeking wisdom and guidance from God before making decisions in our lives. We should be willing to act as messengers of God’s truth and seek His direction.

The Lord God of Israel:Huldah’s message begins with the phrase “Thus saith the Lord God of Israel.” This emphasizes the authority and sovereignty of God over His people. It reminds us that God is the one who speaks and guides His people. As believers, we should recognise God’s authority in our lives and submit to His will.

Prophetic message:Huldah acts as a prophetess, conveying God’s message to the people. Throughout the Bible, God uses prophets and prophetesses to speak on His behalf, delivering messages of warning, encouragement, and instruction. This verse highlights the importance of hearing and heeding the words of God spoken through His chosen messengers.

Obeying God’s Word:The discovery of the Book of the Law and Huldah’s response underscore the significance of God’s Word in the lives of His people. It reveals the importance of studying and obeying Scripture, as it contains God’s instructions and principles for righteous living.

Overall, 2 Kings 22:15 emphasises the role of messengers, the authority of God, the significance of prophetic messages, and the importance of studying and obeying God’s Word. These lessons can encourage us to seek God’s guidance, listen to His voice through His messengers, and align our lives with His will.

Remember, Bible study is an ongoing process, and it is beneficial to read the surrounding verses and explore the historical context to gain a deeper understanding of the passage.
