2 Kings 25:23

And when all the captains of the armies, they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah governor, there came to Gedaliah to Mizpah, even Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan the son of Careah, and Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth the Netophathite, and Jaazaniah the son of a Maachathite, they and their men.

2 Kings 25:23 (KJV)

This verse closes the book of 2 Kings, after Babylon conquered Jerusalem, burned the temple, and carried most of the people into exile. Nebuchadnezzar then appointed Gedaliah, a Jew, as governor over the poor remnant left in Judah. The captains of the surviving Judean forces heard of this appointment and came to Gedaliah at Mizpah, bringing their men with them.

The named leaders—Ishmael, Johanan, Seraiah, and Jaazaniah—represent the remaining military strength of Judah. Their coming to Mizpah shows a willingness to accept Babylonian rule and to live under Gedaliah’s leadership. The mention of their fathers and hometowns, such as Netophah and Maacah, confirms that these were real people in a real place, not legend.

This gathering foreshadows the tragedy recorded in 2 Kings 25:25, where Ishmael later murders Gedaliah. The same chapter that begins with judgment ends with a fragile hope, yet that hope soon fails because of human treachery. God’s sovereignty remains visible even in exile, as He preserves a remnant and keeps His promise to restore His people.

These captains faced a hard choice: resist Babylon and die, or submit and live. Their decision to come to Gedaliah was practical, but it also required humility. Believers today may face similar choices between pride and obedience, especially when God allows difficult circumstances. Trusting God’s plan often means accepting a lower position than we once held.

God does not abandon His people even after judgment. He raised Gedaliah to lead, and He preserved a remnant through whom the Messiah would come. When life seems broken, remember that God still works through ordinary leaders and difficult days to accomplish His purposes.
