1 Chronicles 1:25

Posted on 18 May at 11:30

Eber, Peleg, Rehu, 1 Chronicles 1:25 (KJV)

The book of 1 Chronicles is a historical account that traces the genealogy of the Israelites from Adam to the time of David. Chapter 1 specifically focuses on the descendants of Adam through Noah’s sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Verse 25 records the names “Eber, Peleg, Reu,” as part of the genealogical list of Shem’s descendants.

Understanding the names:

Eber was a descendant of Shem, mentioned as the great‑grandson of Shem. The Hebrew word Eber means “beyond” or “across.” His lineage later includes Abraham, the father of the Israelite nation.

Peleg was the son of Eber. His name means “division” or “splitting.” According to Genesis 10:25, during Peleg’s lifetime the earth was divided, likely referring to the division of peoples and languages at the Tower of Babel.

Reu was the son of Peleg. His name means “friend” or “companion.” Reu appears in the genealogies of Genesis 11:18‑21 and in Luke’s genealogy of Jesus (Luke 3:35‑36).

Lessons from the passage:

Continuity of God’s plan: The genealogy highlights the continuity of God’s plan of salvation throughout history, tracing the line from Adam to Abraham and setting the stage for the covenant and the birth of the Israelite nation. It reminds us that God works through generations and fulfills His promises in His own time.

God’s sovereignty: The mention of Peleg and the division of the earth underscores God’s sovereignty over human history. The Tower of Babel incident, a consequence of human rebellion, was used by God to scatter the people and accomplish His purposes, showing that even in times of confusion and division, God remains in control.

Individual significance: Though these names may seem like a simple list, they represent real people who played a part in God’s plan. Eber’s faithfulness led to a lineage that would ultimately bring forth Jesus Christ. Their inclusion reminds us that every individual has a role in God’s grand plan, no matter how small it may appear.

Application:

Recognise your part in God’s plan: Just as Eber and his descendants had a crucial role, each of us has a purpose and a place in God’s story. Seek God’s guidance to understand how He wants to use your life—whether through family, work, ministry, or other areas.

Trust in God’s sovereignty: When faced with confusion or division, we can find comfort in God’s control. Remember that He can use challenging situations for His purposes and work all things together for the good of those who love Him (Romans 8:28).

Embrace the significance of your faithfulness: Like Eber, who remained faithful, your faithfulness in even small things can have a lasting impact on future generations. Be diligent in living out your faith and honoring God; your influence may extend far beyond what you can see.

This study provides an overview and some insights into the passage. Further exploration of the broader context and related Scriptures can deepen understanding and application of God’s Word.
