1 Chronicles 2:49

Posted on 18 May at 11:31

Shee bare also Shaaph the father of Madmannah, Sheua the father of Machbenah, & the father of Gibea: And the daughter of Caleb was Achsah. 1 Chronicles 2:49 (KJV)

This verse is part of a genealogical list found in the Book of Chronicles. It provides information about the descendants of Caleb, who was one of the prominent figures in the Old Testament. Caleb was known for his faithfulness and bravery in the conquest of Canaan.

The verse states: “And Shaaph the father of Madmannah, Sheva the father of Machbenah, and Gibea the father of the daughter of Caleb was Achsa.” The names Shaaph, Sheva, Machbenah, and Gibea appear in the text, though their specific relationships to Caleb and Achsa are not detailed here.

Achsa is identified as Caleb’s daughter, and her name appears in subsequent verses describing her marriage arrangements. Another passage (1 Chronicles 2:15) records Achsa as the sister of Othniel, confirming her familial connection to Caleb.

Genealogical records in Chronicles were significant in ancient Israelite society for establishing lineage, tribal affiliation, and inheritance rights. These lists helped validate one’s lineage and community standing.

Historically, the Book of Chronicles primarily focuses on the history of the Israelite monarchy and the Davidic lineage, leading up to the construction of the Temple in Jerusalem. By providing genealogies and historical accounts, Chronicles emphasizes the importance of a faithful lineage and God’s sovereign plan in shaping Israel’s history.

In summary, 1 Chronicles 2:49 highlights the descendants of Caleb, mentions Achsa in relation to his family, and contributes to the broader genealogical records that were vital for ancient Israelite identity and theological understanding.
