And Chelub the brother of Shuah, begate Mehir, which was the father of Eshton. 1 Chronicles 4:11 (KJV)

The book of 1 Chronicles is a historical account that records Israel’s lineage from Adam through the post‑exilic period, focusing on the genealogies of the tribes, especially Judah. Chapter 4 lists the descendants of Judah, among whom we find Jabez. The verse introduces Jabez by stating, “Jabez was more honourable than his brethren: and his mother called his name Jabez, saying, Because I bore him with sorrow.” This description implies that Jabez possessed integrity, righteousness, and virtuous conduct that set him apart within his family and community, suggesting a life pleasing to God.

Jabez’s name is significant. It derives from the Hebrew word “ya’abez,” meaning “he causes pain” or “he causes sorrow.” His mother named him so because she experienced great sorrow in his birth, perhaps due to a difficult childbirth. The name reflects the circumstances of his birth but does not determine his destiny.

The subsequent verses present Jabez’s prayer: “And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my territory, that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not trouble me!” The Scripture records that God granted him that which he requested.

This short prayer reveals several important aspects. First, Jabez sought God, demonstrating faith and reliance on the God of Israel despite the challenges associated with his name. Second, he desired God’s blessing: a profound blessing, expansion of his influence and possessions, the continual presence of God’s hand, and protection from evil that would cause grief. Third, God’s response shows divine favour toward Jabez’s heartfelt petition.

Lessons for us today include the power of prayer—Jabez’s example encourages us to bring our needs before God in faith, trusting that He hears and answers according to His wisdom. It also reminds us to seek God’s blessings in every aspect of life, recognizing that true blessings come from Him. God’s willingness to bless is evident, as He answered Jabez’s request, assuring us that He is ready to answer our prayers according to His purposes. Finally, Jabez’s story teaches that we can rise above difficult circumstances; his honourable life shows that we need not be defined by a painful past but can rely on God’s grace to pursue a life that honors Him.
