1 Chronicles 6:12

Posted on 18 May at 11:32

And Ahitub begate Zadok, and Zadok begate Shallum, 1 Chronicles 6:12 (KJV)

“And Ahitub begat Zadok, and Zadok begat Shallum” is a concise genealogical entry in 1 Chronicles chapter 6. This passage belongs to the extensive record of the priestly line of Israel, tracing the descendants of Aaron, brother of Moses, through the generations that led to the time of King David. The three names presented—Ahitub, Zadok, and Shallum—establish a direct father‑son succession that confirms the legitimacy of the high‑priesthood. Genealogies were highly valued in ancient Israel because they determined who possessed the rightful authority to serve as high priest and to perform the sacred duties in the tabernacle and later the temple.

Zadok, the middle figure in this line, assumes a prominent role in the biblical narrative. He served as priest during David’s reign and continued in that capacity under Solomon. The Scriptures record Zadok’s faithfulness and loyalty to both king and God, and he played a crucial part in the anointing of Solomon as king (1 Kings 1:32‑40). His steadfastness made him a central figure in the establishment of the temple in Jerusalem.

Although the verse itself is brief, it is part of a larger narrative that emphasizes the continuity of the priestly line. A subsequent verse (1 Chronicles 6:13‑14) mentions a descendant named Shallum, confirming that the lineage continued beyond Zadok. This continuity underscores the importance of preserving the priestly heritage for the worship and service of God.

Such records also served to protect the community’s identity and to fulfill God’s covenant promises concerning the priestly office. Overall, 1 Chronicles 6:12 offers a clear glimpse into the genealogy of Israel’s high priests, reminding readers of the significance of maintaining an unbroken priestly lineage in the life of the nation.
