1 Chronicles 6:2

Posted on 18 May at 11:32

And the sonnes of Kohath: Amram, Izahar, & Hebron, & Uzziel. 1 Chronicles 6:2 (KJV)

The verse records a segment of the genealogical list found in 1 Chronicles, identifying members of the Kohathite line within the tribe of Levi. The Levites, descendants of Levi—one of Jacob’s twelve sons—were set apart for a unique role in Israel’s worship and service to God. Unlike the other tribes, the Lord did not allocate a specific territorial inheritance to the Levites. While the surrounding tribes received portions of the Promised Land, the Levites were given cities but no tribal allotment, and the Lord Himself was described as their inheritance.

This reality underscores the special relationship between the Levites and God. Their primary calling was to serve as priests, caretakers of the tabernacle and later the temple, and teachers of the Law. Their sustenance came from the offerings and tithes of the broader community, reminding them that their true security, provision, and significance rested in God alone. The principle is echoed in the related promise: “Unto whom the Lord gave no inheritance among their brethren: the Lord is their inheritance, as he said unto them.” A parallel wording states, “The LORD gave them no inheritance among their brothers; the LORD is their inheritance, as He promised them.” (Deuteronomy 18:1‑2).

The passage calls believers to prioritize their relationship with God above material possessions. While material blessings can be good, they must never replace devotion to the Lord. God desires our hearts, our complete trust, and the recognition that He is the ultimate provider and source of all good. The timeless truth highlighted here is that our ultimate inheritance is found not in land or wealth, but in a living, trusting relationship with the Almighty, just as the Levites were reminded of their divine inheritance.
