Context

This verse opens a genealogical record in 1 Chronicles, written after the exile to remind Israel of its heritage and God’s faithfulness. The chronicler gives special attention to Levi, the tribe set apart for sacred service. Levi was the third son of Jacob and Leah (Genesis 29:34), and his three sons—Gershon, Kohath, and Merari—became the heads of the main Levitical families.

Meaning

The verse lists the three principal Levite families. Gershon was the eldest, Kohath the second, and Merari the third. Their names appear here as the foundation for the detailed duties described later in the chapter. The Levites received no single tribal territory. Instead, they lived in cities scattered among the other tribes, serving the tabernacle and later the temple. This brief list also shows God’s sovereign choice of Levi and his descendants for priestly and liturgical service, a theme developed throughout the Old Testament.

Biblical connections

The Gershonites cared for the curtains, coverings, and hangings of the tabernacle. The Kohathites carried the most holy objects, including the Ark of the Covenant, the table of showbread, the lampstand, and the altars. Kohath was the grandfather of Moses, Aaron, and Miriam, so his line produced the priestly family. The Merarites handled the heavier structural parts, such as boards, bars, pillars, and sockets. Together, these duties kept worship orderly and reverent. Each clan had a specific role, and all were essential for the worship of God.

Application

This genealogy shows that God gives different tasks to different people. Every role, whether visible or behind the scenes, was essential for worship. Believers today can serve God faithfully in their own calling, knowing that each contribution matters. The Levites’ careful handling of holy things also reminds us to treat worship with respect and devotion. Just as the Levites were set apart for service, Christians are called to serve God with their lives, honoring Him in every duty.

Reflection

The verse points to the continuity of God’s redemptive plan. The priestly line led to Christ, our great High Priest, who fulfills all priestly service. As we read these names, we see God’s sovereign choice and His care for order in His presence. This brief list invites us to consider our own place in God’s service and to honor Him with the duties He has given us. It also reminds us that God values heritage and order, and that He works through families and generations to accomplish His purposes.
