1 Chronicles 6:10

Posted on 18 May at 11:32

And Iohanan begate Azariah, (hee it is that executed the Priests office, in the temple that Solomon built in Ierusalem) 1 Chronicles 6:10 (KJV)

The verse is part of the genealogical record in 1 Chronicles, tracing the lineage of the priestly tribe of Levi and the descendants of Aaron who served as priests in the temple. It specifically mentions Johanan and his son Azariah, identifying Azariah as the one who ministered as priest in the house of the LORD, the temple that Solomon built in Jerusalem.

Understanding this verse draws attention to Azariah’s recognized service in the temple. His role highlights the significance of the priestly office and the central place of the temple in Israel’s religious life. The passage underscores the continuity of the priestly lineage, showing how the Levites faithfully carried out their responsibilities in the sanctuary.

Historically, the temple in Jerusalem was the focal point of worship and sacrifice in the Old Testament, and the priests were essential in facilitating the spiritual life of the people. Azariah’s ministry exemplifies the faithfulness of the Levites and the importance of maintaining the sanctity of God’s dwelling place.

Reflection and application flow from this example. First, Azariah’s faithful service reminds believers of the call to serve God wholeheartedly, echoing the New Testament description of believers as a “royal priesthood” (1 Peter 2:9) and the exhortation to present ourselves as “living sacrifices” (Romans 12:1). Second, his position reflects the honor and privilege of serving God; Christians are urged to serve with humility and reverence, viewing service as an opportunity to honor Him. Third, the dedication required to build and maintain the temple parallels the responsibility of members of the body of Christ to contribute time, talent, and resources to the growth and well‑being of the Church. Fourth, the genealogical record stresses the continuity of faith, urging believers to teach and model a vibrant faith to future generations. Finally, the temple’s role in the Old Testament points to the New Testament truth that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19), calling us to personal holiness and reverence for God’s presence within us.

Overall, 1 Chronicles 6:10 underscores the continuity of the priestly lineage and the significance of their service in the house of the LORD, reminding believers of faithful service, honor, dedication, generational continuity, and the sacredness of God’s dwelling place within each person.
