1 Chronicles 6:35

Posted on 18 May at 11:32

“And the sons of Merari; Mahli, and Mushi. And these are the families of the Levites according to their fathers.”

hronicles is a book found in the Old Testament and is part of the historical books. It focuses on genealogies, the reign of King David, the organisation of the Levites, and the establishment of the temple in Jerusalem. In this particular verse, the descendants of Merari, who was one of the three sons of Levi (the other two being Gershon and Kohath), are mentioned. The Levites were a tribe chosen by God to serve Him and assist the priests in the tabernacle and later in the temple.

The Sons of Merari:

The verse specifically mentions two sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi. These were important Levitical families within the tribe of Merari. They played a significant role in the service of the tabernacle and later in the temple worship.

The Families of the Levites:

The verse concludes by stating that Mahli and Mushi represent the families of the Levites according to their fathers. This indicates that Mahli and Mushi were heads of their respective families within the tribe of Merari. The Levites were organised into different families, each with its specific responsibilities in the service of the tabernacle and later the temple.

The entire chapter of 1 Chronicles 6 provides an extensive genealogy of the Levites, tracing their lineage from Levi to the time of King David. It emphasises the importance of the Levites in the religious life of ancient Israel and highlights the meticulous record-keeping and organisation within the tribe.

The broader context of this verse showcases the significance of the Levites’ role in the worship of God. They were responsible for the transport, setup, and maintenance of the tabernacle, as well as assisting the priests in offering sacrifices and conducting various rituals. Their duties were crucial to the functioning of the religious system established by God.
