1 Chronicles 6:38

Posted on 18 May at 11:32

The sonne of Izhar, the sonne of Kohath, the sonne of Leui, the sonne of Israel. 1 Chronicles 6:38 (KJV)

And the son of Izhar, Kohath, and the son of Kohath, Amminadab, and the son of Amminadab, Korah, and the son of Korah, Assir, And the sons of Kohath were Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel; and the sons of Izhar were Korah, Nephele, and Zichri. The book of 1 Chronicles is a historical account that focuses on the genealogy and lineage of the Israelites, particularly the tribe of Levi and the descendants of Aaron. This chapter specifically lists the genealogy of the Levites, the tribe chosen for the service of the tabernacle and later the temple.

Genealogy of the Levites: In this verse, the lineage of the Levite family is being traced. Kohath was one of the three sons of Levi, the son of Jacob. The Kohathites held an important role among the Levites, being responsible for the transport and care of the sacred objects used in worship. They were not priests but were entrusted with assisting the priests in their duties. The passage does not list Amminadab as a son of Kohath, nor does it connect Korah to Amminadab.

The Importance of Genealogy: The genealogical records found in the Bible serve multiple purposes. They established a sense of identity and heritage for the Israelites, ensuring the continuity of the priestly and Levitical roles. These records also affirmed the fulfilment of God’s promises to the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Korah’s Rebellious Act: Korah, mentioned in this verse, plays a significant role in the book of Numbers (Numbers 16). He led a rebellion against Moses and Aaron, challenging their leadership and the priestly authority. This rebellion ultimately resulted in severe consequences from God, as the earth opened up and swallowed Korah and his followers. God values order and assigns specific roles to individuals within His divine plan. Each person has a unique purpose and contribution to make. Rebellion against God‑ordained authority can lead to disastrous consequences. It is essential to respect and submit to the leaders appointed by God.

Our family heritage and lineage can provide us with a sense of identity and belonging. Understanding our roots can help us appreciate God’s faithfulness throughout generations. The genealogies in the Bible emphasise the fulfilment of God’s promises. They showcase His faithfulness in preserving a remnant of His people and ultimately leading to the birth of Jesus Christ, who came from the lineage of David, the son of Jesse (1 Chronicles 2:15). Remember, further study of the surrounding verses and the overall context of 1 Chronicles can provide additional insights into the genealogies and historical significance contained within the book.
