1 Chronicles 6:47

Posted on 18 May at 11:32

The sonne of Mahli, the sonne of Mushi, the sonne of Merari, the sonne of Leui. 1 Chronicles 6:47 (KJV)

This verse is part of the genealogical list found in 1 Chronicles chapter 6. The chapter records the lineage of the Levites, one of the twelve tribes of Israel, and focuses on the descendants of Levi, the third son of Jacob (Israel). In this particular verse the focus is on Kohath, the second son of Levi, and it emphasizes the line of Kohath, tracing it back through Levi to Israel. The concise statement of the verse serves as a reminder of the historical and genealogical significance found within the larger context of the chapter.

The purpose of recording these genealogies was to establish the historical and priestly lineage of the Levites, who were entrusted with various priestly duties and responsibilities in the worship and service of God in the tabernacle and later in the temple. The genealogies in the Old Testament, including this verse, are significant for several reasons. First, they provide a historical record of the descendants of Israel, preserving the lineage of the tribes and families. Second, they establish the priestly lineage of the Levites, particularly the descendants of Aaron, who were designated as the priests responsible for offering sacrifices and leading worship. Third, they play a crucial role in tracing the lineage of the Messiah, as the promised Savior was prophesied to come from the line of David, who descended from the tribe of Judah.

While the verse itself simply states the lineage, it reminds readers of the Levitical priesthood and its role in Israel’s worship, providing a link to their ancestors Levi and Israel. Overall, the genealogical records in the Bible connect the present generation with their historical roots, highlight God’s faithfulness to His covenant promises, and provide a foundation for understanding the plan of salvation culminating in Jesus Christ.
