1 Chronicles 6:46

The son of Amzi, the son of Bani, the son of Shamer,

1 Chronicles 6:46 (KJV)

First Chronicles 6 records the genealogy of the Levites, the tribe set apart for service in the tabernacle and later the temple. Verse 46 names Amzi, Bani, and Shamer as links in the lineage of Kohath, one of Levi’s sons. This line leads to Heman, a prominent Levitical musician (1 Chronicles 6:33). The careful listing of these names reflects the post-exilic community’s concern to preserve Israel’s identity and the legitimacy of its worship.

The names themselves carry meaning. Bani means “built” or “posterity,” and Shamer (also spelled Shemer) appears elsewhere in the Old Testament, though not always in the same family line. The verse does not teach doctrine directly; it functions as a historical record. Yet its inclusion shows that every individual in God’s plan is known and recorded, even those whose names appear only once in Scripture.

The genealogies in 1 Chronicles establish the continuity of God’s people and the importance of lineage for priestly service. The Levites were given cities to dwell in, including cities of refuge where someone who unintentionally caused a death could seek safety until a fair hearing (Numbers 35:6). Shechem, a city of refuge, and Gezer were among the cities allotted to the Levites. These cities illustrate God’s balance of mercy and justice, protecting the unintentionally guilty while ensuring accountability.

This verse reminds believers that God values every person, even those whose lives seem obscure. Just as the Levites were set apart for service, each believer is called to serve God faithfully in his or her own place. The cities of refuge point to Jesus Christ, who offers salvation and sanctuary from the consequences of sin. Believers are encouraged to extend mercy and pursue reconciliation, reflecting God’s own character.

The recording of names like Amzi, Bani, and Shamer assures us that God does not forget His people. Our names are written in His book, and our service, however small, is part of His larger purpose. As we read these genealogies, we can trust that God is faithful to preserve His people and to provide refuge in Christ.
