1 Chronicles 6:64

Posted on 18 May at 11:32

“And the children of Israel gave to the Levites these cities with their suburbs.”

Background:The book of 1 Chronicles is a historical record that traces the genealogy and history of the Israelites. Chapter 6 focuses on the lineage of the Levites, who were responsible for the service of worship in the tabernacle and later in the temple.

Verse context:“And the children of Israel gave to the Levites these cities with their suburbs.” (1 Chronicles 6:64, KJV) This verse refers to the allocation of cities and their surrounding pasturelands to the Levites as their inheritance. The Levites did not receive a portion of land like the other tribes of Israel but were given cities throughout the land.

Significance of the Levites:The Levites were descendants of Levi, one of the twelve sons of Jacob. God chose the tribe of Levi to serve Him in the tabernacle and later in the temple. They were responsible for various tasks related to the worship, including offering sacrifices, conducting rituals, and maintaining the holy sanctuary.

The purpose of giving cities to the Levites:The allocation of cities to the Levites served multiple purposes:

  • a) Residence: Providing cities ensures that the Levites had places to live throughout the land, as they did not have an allocated tribal territory. This allowed them to be dispersed among the other tribes and be readily available for their priestly duties.
  • b) Support: The Levites were not given land for farming, so the cities and their surrounding pasturelands were their means of sustenance. The other tribes of Israel provided for the Levites by offering them tithes and giving them a share of their agricultural produce.
  • c) Spiritual influence: By scattering the Levites in various cities, God ensured that His priests were present among the people in different regions. The Levites played a crucial role in teaching the Law, offering spiritual guidance, and leading worship throughout Israel.

Symbolic significance:The allocation of cities to the Levites symbolises the importance of worship and spiritual leadership within the community of believers. The presence of the Levites in different cities represents God’s desire for His people to have access to His Word and the opportunity to engage in true worship wherever they reside.

Application for believers today:Although we no longer have a Levitical priesthood or the need for physical cities to support the Levites, we can draw spiritual lessons from this verse:

  • a) Support for ministers: Just as the Israelites supported the Levites, believers today should support their spiritual leaders. This can be done through financial contributions, offering assistance, and praying for their well-being.
  • b) Availability for service: Like the Levites, Christians are called to be available for God’s service wherever they are. We should seek to be witnesses for Christ and share His love and truth in our communities.
  • c) Importance of worship: The presence of the Levites in the cities highlights the significance of worship in the life of believers. We should prioritise regular fellowship, corporate worship, and personal devotion to God.

By studying 1 Chronicles 6:64, we can gain insights into God’s provision for the Levites and understand the importance of worship, support for spiritual leaders, and the availability of believers for God’s service in our lives today.
