1 Chronicles 9:27

Posted on 18 May at 11:33

“And they lodged round about the house of God, because the charge was upon them, and the opening thereof every morning pertained to them.”

1 Chronicles 9:27 provides insight into the duties and responsibilities of certain individuals who served in the house of God. To fully grasp the meaning of this verse, it’s helpful to provide some context from the surrounding verses.

Firstly, let’s look at the broader context of this verse within the book of 1 Chronicles. The book of 1 Chronicles is a historical account that emphasizes the genealogy, organization, and worship of the Israelites. In chapter 9, the focus is on the returning exiles from Babylon and the restoration of the priestly and Levitical functions in Jerusalem.

In the preceding verses (1 Chronicles 9:16-26), the chapter provides a list of various Levitical responsibilities, including gatekeepers and those entrusted with the care of the temple’s treasures. These individuals were responsible for opening and closing the doors of the house of God, ensuring its security and proper functioning.

Now let’s explore 1 Chronicles 9:27 in more detail:

“And they lodged round about the house of God…”

This phrase indicates that these individuals, who were assigned specific responsibilities, resided near the temple. This proximity enabled them to carry out their duties promptly and efficiently. Their close proximity to the house of God emphasized their dedication and readiness to serve.

“…because the charge was upon them…”

This phrase refers to the responsibility or duty entrusted to these individuals. They had a specific charge or task that they were expected to fulfill. The charge given to them was an important one, involving the daily opening of the house of God.

“…and the opening thereof every morning pertained to them.”

The primary responsibility of these individuals was to open the house of God every morning. This duty ensures that the temple was ready for worship and other activities each day. By emphasizing that this task “pertained to them,” the verse highlights their exclusive responsibility in performing this duty.

From this verse, we can glean several lessons:

Faithful service:These individuals exemplify faithfulness and dedication by fulfilling their responsibilities daily. Their commitment to opening the house of God shows the importance of fulfilling our roles in the service of God.

Attention to detail:The individuals entrusted with opening the temple had to ensure that it was prepared for worship each day. This reminds us of the importance of being diligent and attentive to the details of our own service and worship of God.

Readiness and availability:The fact that these individuals lodged near the house of God suggests that they were always prepared to carry out their duties. They were readily available when needed. As followers of God, we should be prepared and available to serve Him when called upon.

The sacredness of the house of God:The house of God held significant importance in the lives of the Israelites. It was a place of worship and encounter with God. The verse reminds us of the sacredness of the place of worship and encourages us to treat it with reverence and respect.
