1 Chronicles 11:3

Posted on 18 May at 11:30

“Therefore came all the elders of Israel to the king to Hebron; and David made a covenant with them in Hebron before the LORD; and they anointed David king over Israel, according to the word of the LORD by Samuel.”

Context:The book of 1 Chronicles is primarily focused on the lineage of the Israelite tribes and the establishment of the Davidic monarchy. This particular verse highlights an important moment in David’s journey to becoming the king of Israel.

The Gathering of the Elders:The verse begins by stating that all the elders of Israel came to King David in Hebron. The elders represented the leadership and wisdom of the tribes of Israel. This gathering signifies the acknowledgement and acceptance of David’s leadership by the influential figures in the nation.

David’s Covenant:The verse mentions that David made a covenant with the elders before the Lord in Hebron. A covenant is a solemn agreement or contract, often with God as the witness or guarantor. This covenant between David and the elders solidified their commitment to each other and their shared vision for the nation under David’s rule.

Anointing of David as King:The verse concludes by stating that the elders anointed David as king over Israel, in accordance with the word of the Lord spoken through the prophet Samuel. Anointing with oil was a customary practice to consecrate individuals for special roles or positions, and it signified divine approval and empowerment. This anointing marked the official establishment of David’s kingship, fulfilling the Lord’s plan and Samuel’s earlier anointing of David (1 Samuel 16:13).

Significance and Application:1 Chronicles 11:3 highlights the transition of power and the recognition of David as the rightful king of Israel. It demonstrates the importance of unity, agreement, and divine guidance in the process of establishing leadership. The anointing symbolises the divine calling and equipping that accompanies God’s chosen leaders.

  • This verse also reminds us of the importance of seeking God’s direction and involving Him in our decisions, particularly in matters of leadership and governance. It encourages us to make covenants and commitments before the Lord, acknowledging His sovereignty and seeking His guidance and blessings.

Overall, 1 Chronicles 11:3 captures a pivotal moment in David’s ascent to the throne, showcasing God’s providence, the acceptance of the elders, and the anointing that solidified David’s kingship.
