1 Chronicles 17:20
O Lord, there is none like thee neither is there any God besides thee, according to all that we haue heard with our eares. 1 Chronicles 17:20 (KJV)
O LORD,
there is none like thee, neither
is there any
God beside thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears. 1 Chronicles 17:20 (KJV)
The book of 1 Chronicles belongs to the historical books of the Old Testament. It records genealogies and provides a historical account of Israel from the time of Adam through the return from the Babylonian exile. Chapter 17 concentrates on King David’s desire to build a temple for the Lord and the covenant that God establishes with him through the prophet Nathan.
In verse 20 David offers a prayer that combines gratitude, acknowledgement of God’s uniqueness, and a petition for divine favor. He declares that there is none like the LORD and that no other God stands beside Him, echoing the verse’s proclamation of God’s incomparable nature. At the same time David asks that the house of his servant be blessed, that it may endure in the presence of the LORD, and that the holy name of the LORD may be praised there. This dual emphasis reflects both a recognition of God’s sovereignty and a heartfelt request that the future temple and its worshipers experience continual divine presence.
The statement of God’s uniqueness underscores the monotheistic conviction of Israel. The Israelites believed the LORD to be the one true God, unrivaled among the surrounding nations’ deities. This belief is affirmed throughout Scripture and is evident in David’s declaration that there is no other God beside the LORD.
Israel’s confidence in God was reinforced by continual revelation. The people heard testimonies, witnessed miracles, and experienced deliverance, all of which testified to God’s mighty acts and faithfulness. These experiences are echoed in the prayers and worship found throughout the Psalms and the historical books, strengthening the community’s trust that the LORD would sustain the house He was about to establish.
