1 Chronicles 17:23

Posted on 18 May at 11:30

“Therefore now, LORD, let the thing that thou hast spoken concerning thy servant and concerning his house be established for ever, and do as thou hast said.”

1 Chronicles 17:23 is part of a passage that recounts a conversation between the prophet Nathan and King David. In this chapter, David expresses his desire to build a permanent house for the Lord, but God responds to David through Nathan, revealing that it is not David who will build God’s house, but rather God will establish a dynasty for David, and his offspring will build the temple. This specific verse captures David’s response to God’s promise. It reflects David’s humble submission to God’s will and his trust in God’s faithfulness to fulfil His promises. Let’s dive deeper into the key themes and lessons we can learn from this verse:

“Therefore,” David begins his response with the word which indicates his acknowledgment of God’s authority and sovereignty. He recognises that the promise given to him is solely dependent on God’s will and power. It serves as a reminder that in our own lives, we should acknowledge God’s sovereignty and trust in His plans, even when they may differ from our own.

Seeking God’s Establishing:David prays to the Lord, asking for the fulfilment of God’s promise. He acknowledges that only God can establish the things spoken concerning him and his house. This demonstrates David’s understanding that it is God’s role to bring His promises to pass. Similarly, in our lives, we should approach God with a heart of humility, seeking His guidance and asking for His will to be established.

Trusting in God’s Word:David’s request to God is based on his trust in God’s faithfulness. He asks God to do as He has said, indicating his confidence in God’s promises. This highlights the importance of trusting in God’s Word and relying on His faithfulness. God’s promises are sure and unwavering, and we can place our trust in Him to fulfil them according to His perfect timing and plan.

Applying the Lesson Today:While this verse speaks specifically to David’s situation and God’s promise of a dynasty, we can draw valuable lessons from it. It reminds us to submit to God’s sovereignty, seek His will, and trust in His faithfulness. We should approach God with humility, acknowledging that His plans are higher and better than our own. We can also find encouragement in the knowledge that God’s promises are reliable, and He will bring them to pass.

In summary, 1 Chronicles 17:23 captures David’s response to God’s promise of establishing a dynasty for him. It teaches us the importance of acknowledging God’s sovereignty, seeking His will, and trusting in His faithfulness. By applying these lessons in our own lives, we can grow in our relationship with God and experience His blessings as we align our lives with His plans.
