1 Chronicles 17:9
Also I will ordeine a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, and they shall dwell in their place, and shall be moued no more: neither shal the children of wickednesse waste them any more (as at the beginning, 1 Chronicles 17:9 (KJV)
This verse is part of a larger passage in which God speaks to the prophet Nathan concerning King David’s desire to build a house for God, a temple. In response, God declares His promise to David and makes several significant announcements. Let’s break down the verse and explore its deeper meaning: “Also, I will ordain a place for my people Israel”: God promises to establish a permanent dwelling place for the people of Israel. This refers to the land of Canaan, which God had promised to give to the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob (Genesis 12:7; 13:14-15; 15:18-21; 17:7-8; 26:3; 28:13-15). “And will plant them, and they shall dwell in their place, and shall be moved no more”: God assures the Israelites that He will settle them securely in the land. The imagery of planting emphasizes stability and permanence. This promise is understood within the context of God’s covenant with David, though historical events such as the Babylonian exile demonstrate that the full realization of this security remains tied to God’s ultimate purposes. “Neither shall the children of wickedness waste them any more, as at the beginning”: God assures Israel that they will no longer be oppressed or destroyed by their enemies, particularly the wicked nations that previously posed a threat. The phrase “as at the beginning” likely refers to the period of the Judges when Israel faced repeated invasions and oppression due to their disobedience to God’s laws. In a broader context, this verse is part of God’s covenant with David, known as the Davidic Covenant. God makes an everlasting promise to David that one of his descendants will establish an eternal kingdom. This promise finds its ultimate fulfillment in Jesus Christ, who is from the lineage of David and whose kingdom will never end (Luke 1:31-33). The verse also emphasizes God’s faithfulness in fulfilling His promises. Despite the ups and downs of Israel’s history, God assures them of His steadfast commitment to establish them securely in their land, protect them from their enemies, and ultimately bring about His redemptive plan. In summary, 1 Chronicles 17:9 highlights God’s promise to establish a permanent dwelling place for His people Israel, assuring their security and protection from their enemies. It also points forward to the fulfillment of the Davidic Covenant in Jesus Christ, who establishes an eternal kingdom.
