1 Chronicles 17:25

For thou, O my God, hast told thy servant that thou wilt build him an house: therefore thy servant hath found in his heart to pray before thee.

1 Chronicles 17:25 (KJV)

This verse comes from David’s prayer after the prophet Nathan delivered God’s message. David had wanted to build a permanent temple for the Lord, but God said David would not build it; his son Solomon would. Instead, God promised to establish David’s royal line forever. This background makes David’s prayer deeply personal and thankful.

David calls God “my God” and himself “thy servant,” showing humble closeness. The word “house” here does not mean a building; it means a dynasty, an enduring royal family. God had “told” David this promise, so David could pray with certainty. The phrase “found in his heart” means prayer arose from deep inner conviction, not mere ritual. God’s own word gave David courage to approach Him boldly. This boldness is not presumption; it rests on what God has already declared.

The parallel account in 2 Samuel 7:27 records nearly the same prayer, confirming David’s consistent response. The promise of an everlasting dynasty points forward to Jesus Christ, who builds the church and rules an eternal kingdom. When God speaks a promise, the right response is confident prayer that agrees with what He has declared.

  • Thank God for His promises, just as David thanked Him for the promise of a lasting house.

  • Pray with humility, addressing God with reverence and recognizing our dependence on Him.

  • Trust God’s timing, even when His plan differs from our own desires, as David accepted that Solomon would build the temple.

David’s prayer teaches that God’s promises are foundations for our prayers. We can approach God with assurance because He has spoken. His plans are perfect, and His timing is right. Let this encourage us to pray with grateful hearts, humble spirits, and confident trust in the God who keeps every word He gives.
