1 Chronicles 18:9
Now when Tou king of Hamath heard how David had smitten all the host of Hadarezer king of Zobah;
1 Chronicles 18:9 (KJV)
Context
This verse sits within the record of David’s military victories after he had made Jerusalem his capital. He had just defeated the army of Hadadezer, king of Zobah. Tou, king of Hamath, heard this news. Hamath was a city-state to the north, and its ruler now learned of David’s growing power.
Meaning
The name “Tou” may mean “wanderer” or “shepherd,” and the parallel account in 2 Samuel 8:9 calls him “Toi.” His reaction shows that David’s success was widely known. Tou did not prepare for war; instead, he later sent his son with gifts and blessings, as the next verse records. This indicates that David’s victory brought not only fear but also a desire for peace among neighboring kings.
Biblical connections
David’s triumphs were not merely personal achievements. God had promised to give Israel rest from its enemies, and these events fulfilled that promise. The news reaching Hamath shows that God’s power was evident to surrounding nations, not just to Israel.
Application
God can use the victories of His people to influence others. When we walk in obedience and faith, our lives can become a witness to those around us. Like Tou, people may hear of God’s work and respond with respect or even seek friendship.
Reflection
This verse reminds us that God is sovereign over nations and rulers. He can cause even distant kings to take notice of His people. Trust that God is at work in your circumstances, and let your faithfulness be a testimony to His power.
