1 Chronicles 19:6

And when the children of Ammon saw that they had made themselves odious to David, Hanun and the children of Ammon sent a thousand talents of silver to hire them chariots and horsemen out of Mesopotamia, and out of Syria–maachah, and out of Zobah.

1 Chronicles 19:6 (KJV)

This verse is part of David’s conflict with the Ammonites. After King Nahash died, David sent messengers to comfort his son Hanun. But Hanun’s advisers suspected them as spies, so he humiliated them by shaving half their beards and cutting their garments. This insult made the Ammonites repulsive to David, and they knew it.

Realizing their grave error, the Ammonites did not seek peace. Instead, they prepared for war by hiring a massive force. A thousand talents of silver was an enormous sum, roughly 37.5 tons. They used it to bring chariots and horsemen from Mesopotamia, Syria-maachah, and Zobah. This shows how seriously they took the coming conflict and how far they would go to oppose David.

The parallel account in 2 Samuel 10:6 adds details about the size of the hired army, specifying thousands of footmen and horsemen from nearby kingdoms. The next verse in 1 Chronicles records that they hired 32,000 chariots. This reveals the scale of the threat against Israel. Yet the broader narrative shows that Israel’s victory came not from superior numbers but from God’s power, as Joab later declares in 1 Chronicles 19:13.

This passage warns against relying on human alliances and wealth to secure peace. The Ammonites’ pride and suspicion led them to escalate conflict rather than seek reconciliation. Their costly preparations could not protect them. For us, it is a reminder that unrepentant wrongdoing often leads to further, more expensive actions. Trusting in God’s sovereignty is wiser than trusting in our own resources.

When we offend someone, do we rush to defend ourselves or do we seek to make things right? The Ammonites chose to double down on their hostility. May we instead choose humility and reconciliation, knowing that God is able to deliver His people from any threat.
