1 Chronicles 19:11

Posted on 18 May at 11:31

“And the rest of the people he delivered unto the hand of Abishai his brother, and they set themselves in array against the children of Ammon.”

Context:In 1 Chronicles 19, we read about the events that unfolded when Nahash, the king of the Ammonites, died. David, the king of Israel, sought to show kindness to Hanun, Nahash’s son, in order to establish peaceful relations. However, Hanun’s advisors misled him and convinced him that David’s messengers had come to spy on the land. Consequently, Hanun humiliated and mistreated David’s messengers.

The verse in question, 1 Chronicles 19:11, occurs in the context of the ensuing conflict between the Ammonites and the Israelites. Joab, the commander of David’s army, led a portion of the Israelite forces against the Ammonites. David entrusted the remaining troops to his brother Abishai, who then set themselves in battle formation against the Ammonites.

The consequences of pride and arrogance:The mistreatment of David’s messengers by Hanun and his advisors was a result of pride and arrogance.

Trusting in God’s appointed leaders:David’s decision to entrust the Israelite forces to Abishai, his brother, demonstrates his confidence in God’s appointed leaders.

Unity and teamwork:The verse highlights the importance of unity and teamwork within the Israelite army.

Standing against injustice:The conflict with the Ammonites arose due to their unjust treatment of David’s messengers.
