1 Chronicles 21:27

Posted on 18 May at 11:31

“And the Lord commanded the angel; and he put up his sword again into the sheath thereof.”

Context:First Chronicles 21 records the account of King David’s sinful act of numbering the people of Israel, which was against God’s command. As a result, God sent a plague upon Israel, bringing devastation and death. David repented and sought God’s forgiveness. In response, God instructed David to build an altar on the threshing floor of Ornan (Araunah) the Jebusite.

The Sacrifice:In verse 26, David purchased the threshing floor from Ornan and built an altar there to offer sacrifices to the Lord. David recognised the need for an atoning sacrifice to appease God’s anger and seek His mercy. He desired to make amends for his sin and prevent further harm to the people.

God’s Intervention:As David was about to offer the burnt offerings on the altar, the angel of the Lord intervened. The angel had been executing God’s judgment by striking the people with a plague, but at God’s command, the angel stopped and sheathed his sword. This act of putting the sword back into its sheath signified the cessation of God’s judgment and the end of the plague.

Lessons from 1 Chronicles 21:27:

  • Repentance and Seeking God’s Mercy:David’s response to his sin provides an essential lesson. He acknowledged his wrongdoings, repented sincerely, and sought God’s mercy through sacrifice. This demonstrates the importance of recognising our sins, confessing them to God, and seeking His forgiveness.
  • God’s Judgment and Mercy:This verse showcases God’s power to execute judgment and His ability to show mercy. Despite David’s disobedience, God extended His mercy when David repented and took appropriate actions. It reveals God’s willingness to forgive and relent from punishment when true repentance is demonstrated.
  • Divine Intervention:The angel’s act of sheathing his sword illustrates the direct involvement of God in the affairs of humanity. It reminds us that God is in control and can intervene to bring about His purposes and to respond to the prayers of His people.
  • The Importance of Sacrifice:David’s act of offering sacrifices on the altar emphasises the significance of sacrifice in worship and seeking reconciliation with God. It highlights the need for a substitute to atone for sin, foreshadowing the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross for the forgiveness of sins.

Application:

  • Genuine Repentance:When we recognise our sins, it is vital to genuinely repent and turn to God. He is gracious and forgiving, ready to extend His mercy when we confess and seek His forgiveness.
  • Trusting in God’s Mercy:Like David, we can trust in God’s merciful nature. Even in the face of our mistakes, if we turn to Him with a humble heart, He is willing to extend His mercy and bring healing and restoration.
  • Gratitude for Divine Intervention:Reflecting on God’s intervention in our lives helps cultivate a heart of gratitude. Recognise the times when God has intervened, protected, or shown mercy, and express thankfulness for His grace.
  • Understanding Sacrifice:Remember the ultimate sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross, which provides complete forgiveness and reconciliation with God. Embrace His sacrifice and live a life of gratitude, worship, and obedience.

As with any Bible study, it’s essential to read and consider the surrounding verses and consult other resources to gain a comprehensive understanding of the passage.
