1 Chronicles 22:6

Posted on 18 May at 11:31

Then hee called for Solomon his sonne, and charged him to build an house for the Lord God of Israel. 1 Chronicles 22:6 (KJV)

The book of 1 Chronicles serves as a historical record of Israel’s monarchy, with a particular focus on King David. Chapter 22 details David’s careful preparations for the construction of the temple in Jerusalem, a work that would ultimately be carried out by his son Solomon. The verse reads, “Then he called for Solomon his son, and charged him to build a house for the LORD God of Israel.”

David’s desire is evident in his recognition that Solomon would have the privilege and responsibility of building a house for the Lord. He longed to honor God by establishing a permanent dwelling place for Him, a desire that reflects his deep reverence and commitment to the worship of the Almighty.

Divine direction is highlighted in this passage, as David personally summons Solomon and entrusts him with the temple task. The narrative suggests that David received divine guidance in understanding that Solomon was chosen for this purpose, a choice later confirmed by God Himself in the following verses (1 Chronicles 22:9‑10).

The symbolic significance of the temple extends beyond a mere physical structure. It represents the establishment of a central place for worship and the ongoing relationship between God and His people. The temple signifies the permanence of God’s presence among His chosen nation, serving as a tangible reminder of His covenant.

Prior to calling Solomon, David was busy making extensive preparations. He amassed abundant resources—gold, silver, bronze, iron, and cedar wood (1 Chronicles 22:14)—to ensure that Solomon would have everything necessary to build the house of the Lord. This thorough provisioning underscores David’s dedication to the project.

Although David’s ambition to build the temple was noble, God’s plan placed the task in Solomon’s hands because of Solomon’s peaceable reign and the specific gifts God had given him. This teaches that God has a purpose for each individual and that His timing and plans are perfect, inviting believers to trust in divine direction even when personal aspirations differ from God’s sovereign design.
