1 Chronicles 23:31

Posted on 18 May at 11:31

“And to offer all burnt sacrifices unto the LORD in the sabbaths, in the new moons, and on the set feasts, by number, according to the order commanded unto them, continually before the LORD”

Context:This verse is part of a larger section where King David is organising the Levites for their service in the tabernacle and temple. It provides instructions regarding the offering of burnt sacrifices on specific occasions: the Sabbaths, the new moons, and the set feasts.

The significance of burnt sacrifices: In the Old Testament, burnt offerings were a form of worship in which the entire animal sacrifice was completely burned on the altar. It symbolised complete surrender and devotion to God. The offering of burnt sacrifices was an essential part of Israel’s religious practices, emphasising the need for atonement and seeking God’s forgiveness.

Observing the Sabbaths:The Sabbath was a day of rest and worship set aside by God for His people (Exodus 20:8-11). In addition to resting from their regular work, the Israelites were to present burnt offerings to the Lord on the Sabbaths. This act demonstrated their commitment to honour God and recognise His lordship over their lives.

Celebrating the new moons:The new moon marked the beginning of each lunar month in the Jewish calendar. It was a time of celebration and thanksgiving. Along with other worship practices, the Israelites were instructed to offer burnt sacrifices on these occasions. This act highlighted their gratitude for God’s faithfulness and provision.

Honouring the set feasts:The set feasts referred to the annual festivals that God ordained for Israel, such as Passover, Pentecost, and the Feast of Tabernacles. These feasts held great significance in the religious and cultural life of the Israelites. The offering of burnt sacrifices during these occasions demonstrated their obedience to God’s commands and their desire to worship Him with reverence.

The order and continuity of worship:The verse emphasises that the offerings were to be made “by number” and “according to the order commanded unto them.” This indicates the importance of maintaining proper procedures and rituals in worship. The Levites were responsible for ensuring that the sacrifices were offered regularly, without interruption, and in accordance with God’s specific instructions.

Offering sacrifices continually before the Lord:The phrase “continually before the LORD” underscores the perpetual nature of the Levites’ service. Their duty was to ensure that the worship of God never ceased. They were to offer sacrifices regularly and consistently, maintaining an ongoing relationship with God and reflecting their commitment to Him.
