1 Chronicles 25:17

Posted on 18 May at 11:31

The tenth to Shimei, he, his sons and his brethren were twelue: 1 Chronicles 25:17 (KJV)

The book of 1 Chronicles records the genealogies and history of Israel, with chapter 25 detailing the organization of the Levitical singers appointed for service in the house of God. This verse notes that the tenth lot fell to a designated Levitical family, and that the individual, together with his sons and brethren, comprised twelve members who served in the temple worship.

The passage highlights that the singers and musicians were drawn from families who dedicated multiple members to the work of worship. By assigning a whole family unit, the text underscores the communal nature of temple service and the sharing of responsibilities among relatives.

From this we draw several practical lessons. First, worship and service are valued highly; the Israelites appointed skilled musicians to lead praise, reminding believers that their own talents can be offered to God. Second, the involvement of sons and brethren points to the importance of family and community in spiritual life. Faith is not meant to be lived in isolation but in partnership with those closest to us. Third, the distribution of duties among many family members illustrates unity and cooperation. Each person had a role, and together they created a harmonious worship experience, a principle that applies to the body of Christ today. Finally, the brief mention of this family teaches that even seemingly minor or behind‑the‑scenes roles are honored by God. Faithfulness in any capacity, whether public or private, is seen and rewarded by the Lord.

Overall, 1 Chronicles 25:17 encourages believers to employ their gifts in worship, to cherish the support of family and community, to work together in unity, and to remain faithful in every task entrusted to them within the house of God.
